Seismology of pre-white dwarfs: Models for pulsating sdB stars
نویسنده
چکیده
Two kinds of pre-white dwarf stars can be probed through asteroseismology: planetary nebula nuclei (PNNs) and sdB (EHB) stars. To exploit the observed pulsations requires models that incorporate state-ofthe-art input physics and realistic evolutionary histories. Pulsation analysis of extensive grids of such models provide self-consistent theoretical pulsation periods for comparison with observed pulsations in these stars. While there has been significant progress in the seismological studies of PNNs and hot white dwarfs, similar studies of the pulsating sdB stars (the EC14026 stars) have just begun. Here, I describe some preliminary results and interpretations of the pulsations of sdB stars. Eventually, we expect that the seismological constraints on their masses, luminosities, and interior compositional structure will provide a framework for exploration of this poorly understood phases of stellar evolution.

The Future of Computational Asteroseismology
The history of stellar seismology suggests that observation and theory often take turns advancing our understanding. The recent tripling of the sample of pulsating white dwarfs generated by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey represents a giant leap on the observational side. The time is ripe for a comparable advance on the theoretical side. There are basically two ways we can improve our theoretical ...
متن کاملExtreme Horizontal Bran h Stars
A review is presented on the properties, origin and evolutionary links of hot subluminous stars which are generally believed to be extreme Horizontal Branch stars or closely related objects. They exist both in the disk and halo populations (globular clusters) of the Galaxy. Amongst the field stars a large fraction of sdBs are found to reside in close binaries. The companions are predominantly w...
متن کاملSubluminous B Stars and Progenitors of Helium Core White Dwarfs
It is now generally accepted that the subluminous B (sdB) stars can be identified with models for Extreme Horizontal Branch (EHB) stars burning He in their core, but with a very tiny inert hydrogen envelope (Heber, 1986). An EHB star bears great resemblance to a helium main-sequence star of half a solar mass and its further evolution should proceed similarly (i.e. directly to the white dwarf gr...
متن کاملLTE or NLTE for the analysis of hot white dwarf and subdwarf B stars?
We evaluate the influence of NLTE effects on hydrogen and helium lines of high gravity stars. This investigation covers the classes of hydrogen-rich DA and DAO white dwarfs and helium-rich DO white dwarfs. Furthermore, model atmospheres of hydrogen-rich subdwarf B (sdB) stars are investigated. Implications for model atmosphere analyses of such stars are discussed. Pure hydrogen atmospheres of D...
متن کاملMight Carbon - Atmosphere White Dwarfs Harbour a New Type of Pulsating Star ?
Aims. In the light of the recent and unexpected discovery of a brand new type of white dwarfs, those with carbon-dominated atmospheres, we examine the asteroseismological potential of such stars. The motivation behind this is based on the observation that past models of carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs have partially ionized outer layers that bear strong resemblance with those responsible for mod...
